BACK TO SCHOOL: BACK ON THE WAGON

Ah, sweet summertime! The season of cookouts, vacations, kids' sports, and beach outings. It’s a time filled with joy, relaxation, and, let’s face it, a bit of chaos. The days are long, the nights are warm, and the temptation to indulge in all the summer has to offer is irresistible. But as school starts and life returns to its regular rhythm, it's the perfect time to get your act together. Here’s how you can use the end of summer as a springboard to build consistency and regain control of your health journey.

Consistency is the key to fitness success

The Summer Slump

Summer is a whirlwind of activity. There are family barbecues with delicious, albeit not-so-healthy, foods. Vacations disrupt routines and often lead to overindulgence. Kids' sports schedules can be hectic, leaving little time for your own workouts. Beach outings and social gatherings take priority, and before you know it, your fitness routine has taken a back seat. It's easy to feel like you've completely fallen off the wagon.

Back-to-School: A Fresh Start

As the school year approaches, it's an excellent opportunity to reset and refocus. Rather than attempting to overhaul your lifestyle overnight, take baby steps towards creating consistency. This approach will help you avoid burnout and make sustainable changes.

Keys to Building Consistency

  1. Desire and Commitment: Defining Your Why Start by defining your “why.” Why do you want to get back on track? Visualize the benefits of being consistent with your fitness routine. Whether it's having more energy, feeling confident, or being able to keep up with your kids, having a clear understanding of your motivation will keep you committed.

  2. Changing Your Identity: Embrace the New You Instead of saying, “I want to be fit,” start identifying yourself as someone who is fit. This mindset shift is powerful. When you see yourself as a fit person, your actions naturally align with that identity. Say it out loud: “I am fit.” Believe it, and you'll start acting like it.

  3. Enjoy the Activity: Make It Fun Loving what you do is crucial for consistency. Find activities that you enjoy and look forward to. Whether it’s dancing, hiking, swimming, or playing a sport, make it fun. You can even gamify your workouts by setting small challenges and rewarding yourself when you achieve them.

  4. Consistency Over Perfection: Keep Bouncing Back Life happens, and you might miss a day or two. That’s okay. Consistency doesn’t mean being perfect. It means showing up regularly and bouncing back after a setback. Don’t let a missed workout derail your entire journey. Keep pushing forward, one day at a time.

  5. Start Small but Aim Big: Building Momentum Begin with small, manageable steps. Starting small helps you build momentum and avoid feeling overwhelmed. It could be as simple as a 10-minute walk each day or doing a short workout at home. As you build confidence and routine, you can gradually increase the intensity and duration.

  6. Find Your Tribe: Surround Yourself with Support Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who support your goals. Whether it's a workout buddy, a fitness class, or an online community, having a tribe that encourages and motivates you makes a huge difference. Your tribe will celebrate your successes and lift you up when you need it most.

Embrace the Journey

Remember, getting back on track is a journey, not a race. Embrace the process and be kind to yourself along the way. Summer might have thrown you off your game, but with desire, commitment, and the right strategies, you can build a consistent routine that lasts well beyond the back-to-school season.

As the school bells ring and the summer days wane, seize this moment to reset. Take those baby steps, build your momentum, and soon you’ll find yourself not just back on track, but thriving.
