Why Do We Start With a Conversation?

Every person who walks into a gym is starting from a different place.


Different experiences.

Different goals.

Different challenges.


That’s why at GRIT, we don’t start people with a workout.

We start with a conversation.


When someone sits down with us for the first time, we want to understand what brought them in.


  • What are they hoping to change?

  • What has their experience with exercise been like in the past?

  • Do they enjoy group environments, or would they feel more comfortable starting with private or small-group training?

  • Are there injuries we should know about?

  • How are they sleeping?

  • How is their nutrition?

These questions help us understand the person sitting across from us—not just their goal, but the circumstances around that goal.


Because when someone decides to walk into a gym, they’re usually already carrying a lot in their head.


Maybe they’re wondering if they’ll be the least experienced person in the room.Maybe they’re worried about getting hurt.Maybe they’re not even sure if they belong there at all.


Taking a few minutes to talk through those things first changes the entire experience.

Instead of walking into a room full of unknowns, people walk into their first workout with a better understanding of what to expect and how we’re going to help them move forward.

Because when someone says, “I want to get in shape,” that sentence can mean a lot of different things.


For some people it means losing weight. For others it means getting stronger. For others it means having more energy, moving without pain, or simply feeling better in their body again.


Sometimes it means feeling comfortable in their clothes again.

Sometimes it means keeping up with their kids without feeling exhausted.

Sometimes it means finally building habits they’ve struggled to maintain on their own.


Those goals might sound similar on the surface, but the path to reaching them can look very different depending on the person.

And that’s exactly why understanding someone’s starting point matters so much.

Once we understand that, the next step is getting a clear picture of where someone is starting.


We do this using an InBody scan.

The scan gives us objective information about things like body composition, muscle mass, and overall balance within the body.

It’s not about judgment. It’s simply information.

It gives us a baseline so we can make thoughtful recommendations about training, recovery, and nutrition moving forward.


After the scan, we go through a simple movement assessment.

Nothing complicated or intimidating—just a way for us to see how someone’s body naturally moves.


How they squat.

How they hinge.

How they stabilize.


These movements tell us a lot. They help us identify strengths, areas that may need support, and patterns that could lead to discomfort or injury if we ignore them.


When we combine the conversation, the scan, and the movement assessment, we begin to understand the full picture of where someone is starting.

And that’s what allows us to help in a meaningful way.


A lot of gyms start people with a workout.

But people don’t walk into a gym with a “fitness goal.”

They walk in with a problem.


Something in their life isn’t working the way they want it to.

Maybe they’re tired all the time.Maybe their body doesn’t move the way it used to.Maybe they want to feel stronger, healthier, or more confident again.


Our role is to help them find the right path toward solving that problem.

Sometimes that path starts in a group class.

Sometimes it starts with one-on-one coaching.

Sometimes it begins with a smaller setting so someone can build confidence and familiarity before stepping into something new.


There isn’t one path that works for everyone.

And the only way to figure out the right one is to understand the person first.

Which is why the best place to begin is always the same place.

With a conversation.
